HSA Managers Make a Splash in the Harvard Community

The influence and innovation of HSA members are spreading to the greater Harvard community. FY12 Harvard Shop managers Nuseir Yassin ’14 and Christine Chen ’14 were recognized in an article by the Harvard Gazette about this year’s CS50 Fair. The CS50 Fair is an annual showcase of all of the projects created in the introductory computer science course. Nuseir’s project, Kindify, seeks to promote transactions of goodwill by allowing people to see their kind acts spread through a “tree of kindness.” Christine chose to put her coding skills to use in creating a new website for the Chinatown Citizenship Program, a PBHA program that tutors Chinese immigrants preparing for the U.S. citizenship test.

Meanwhile, Chief Technology Officer Scott Crouch was interviewed for a WGBH article about the formal opening for the Harvard Innovation Lab (nicknamed the i-lab). HSA Rover, led by Scott, is one of several groups collaborating with the i-lab. The i-lab hopes to promote entrepreneurship and innovation across all of Harvard’s campuses, from the College to the Business School. It formally opened on November 18, 2011.

Congratulations to all three HSA managers!

HSA Membership Elects New Student Board Members

Congratulations to the newest members of the HSA Board of Directors:
Ali Evans
Andy Harris
Caroline Davis
Kirk Benson
Lauren Xie
Nuseir Yassin
Roland Yang
Rose Wang

Every year the HSA membership elects several student employees to serve as student representatives to the Board of Directors. The student members work alongside experienced business professionals, HBS alumni and professors, and Harvard University administrators to comprise the HSA Board of Directors. The Directors discuss HSA strategy, new initiatives, financials, and opportunities for growth during monthly meetings and in smaller committees. As the student board members receive business advice and mentorship from the senior board members, the opportunity to serve as one of HSA’s Board of Directors is one of the greatest benefits of working at HSA.  Congratulations again to the new student board members!

General Mills CEO/HSA Alum in Fortune

http://management.fortune.cnn.com/2011/05/16/general-mills-global-sweet-spot/

Ice cream is a food category worth $74 billion annually worldwide. It’s highly fragmented. But Häagen-Dazs stands out at the premium end. “It’s highly differentiated, beautifully positioned across markets — and with lots of growth opportunities,” says the 57-year-old Powell, who’s worked at General Mills three decades and made his name as a top executive abroad. (He met his future wife in college when he ran Harvard Student Agencies, which puts out the venerable Let’s Go travel guides; she went Europe.) “We can do green tea in Asia, we can do different versions of flavors in Europe — Häagen-Dazs works everywhere.”
